One of the best things about staying in downtown Gatlinburg is that great food can sometimes be found in the places you least expect. Tucked away inside The Village Shops, just a short walk from Edgewater Hotel, Josef’s Deli has quickly become one of my favorite lunch stops.
On a recent spring afternoon, the weather was about as perfect as it gets in the Smokies. The sun was shining, the flowers around town were blooming, and downtown Gatlinburg was buzzing with visitors enjoying the season. After wandering through The Village for a bit, I decided it was time for lunch and stepped into Josef’s Deli.
If you’ve never visited The Village, it’s one of Gatlinburg’s most charming shopping areas. Designed to feel like a European village, it features brick walkways, unique shops, and a beautiful fountain courtyard in the center. It’s easy to spend an hour or two browsing before working up an appetite.
Josef’s Deli is a small family-owned sandwich shop located right in the middle of all that activity. The space itself is cozy, with only a handful of seats available inside. During busy times you may find yourself taking your meal to go, but honestly, that’s part of the appeal.
After looking over the menu, I settled on the Appalachian French Dip with a side of cole slaw. It turned out to be an excellent choice.
The sandwich arrived piled high with tender roast beef on fresh bread, served alongside a cup of rich, savory au jus. The first bite was everything you want from a French dip. The beef was flavorful, the bread held together perfectly, and the au jus added just the right amount of extra flavor without overwhelming the sandwich.
The cole slaw was fresh and crisp, providing a nice contrast to the warm sandwich. Together, it made for a satisfying lunch that felt substantial without being overly heavy.
One thing that stood out was the value. Gatlinburg offers plenty of dining options, but Josef’s delivers quality food at a price that feels reasonable, especially considering its downtown location. Many visitors have praised the deli for offering fresh sandwiches and generous portions without the premium prices found at some tourist-heavy restaurants.
If seating inside is full, don’t worry. Grab your food to go and head out into The Village courtyard. There are benches surrounding the fountain where you can relax, enjoy your meal, and watch shoppers pass by. On a beautiful spring day, it’s hard to imagine a better lunch setting. Of course, if you’d rather enjoy your meal in peace, Josef’s is also close enough to take your lunch back to your room at Edgewater Hotel.
Josef’s Deli has become something of a local favorite since opening in The Village, earning praise for its fresh sandwiches, homemade sides, and friendly atmosphere. The menu includes everything from Reubens and Italian sandwiches to salads and desserts, giving visitors plenty of reasons to return and try something new.
If you’re looking for a quick, affordable lunch while exploring downtown Gatlinburg, Josef’s Deli is absolutely worth a stop. The Appalachian French Dip alone is enough reason to visit, but the combination of good food, reasonable prices, and one of the most charming locations in town makes it easy to recommend.
Next time you’re staying at Edgewater Hotel, take a short walk over to The Village and give Josef’s a try. Just be prepared to start planning what you’ll order on your next visit before you’ve even finished your sandwich.
