One of the best parts about staying at Edgewater Hotel is how easy it is to wander out and find a great local spot for lunch. On a recent sunny afternoon, I took a short walk over to Tom & Earl’s Back Alley Grill, tucked just off the Parkway on River Road, and ended up having one of those simple, memorable Gatlinburg meals.

Tom & Earl’s has that relaxed, no-pressure kind of atmosphere right from the start. You seat yourself, which I always appreciate, especially on a nice day when you can pick out the perfect outdoor table. I grabbed a spot outside, kicked back, and took in the view up River Road – with a clear sightline back toward Edgewater Hotel. Not a bad backdrop for lunch.

It took a few minutes for things to get rolling service-wise, but once everything got going, it was smooth sailing. Honestly, it felt more like part of the laid-back vibe than anything else. This is the kind of place where you’re not in a rush anyway.

I ordered the Burning Bear Burger, cooked medium well, and paired it with a cold beer. If you like a little heat, this burger delivers. It’s a thick 8 oz. beef patty topped with ghost pepper cheese, habanero bacon jam, jalapeños, lettuce, and onion, all on a toasted bun. It’s got a serious kick without being over the top, and the flavors balance out really well. Messy in the best way.

For sides, I went with baked beans and potato salad, and both held their own. Nothing fancy, just solid, well-made sides that fit perfectly with a good burger and a cold drink.

What really made the experience stand out, though, was the setting. Sitting outside in the sunshine, enjoying a great burger and a beer, and looking back toward Edgewater Hotel just felt like a perfect Gatlinburg moment. It’s the kind of easy afternoon you hope for when you’re in town.

If you’re staying at Edgewater and looking for a casual, local spot within walking distance, Tom & Earl’s Back Alley Grill is definitely worth checking out. Come hungry, take your time, and grab a seat outside if the weather’s right.
